The documents needed to apply for NSFAS are part of the criteria that support your application. Just submitting your personal information alone will not be enough and guarantee approval. That is why it is necessary to prepare ahead once you register with NSFAS.

What Documents Do I Need to Apply For NSFAS

So what are the documents needed to apply for NSFAS 2026? To answer, you must first even understand the concept of documents. This will give you an insight into your application. To educate you, documents refer to any printed, written, or electronic representation of information that can be used for manifestation, assessment, informative tasks, or provide evidence to a thought or a subject matter. Now that you know what documents are, you will definitely get a broader picture of what NSFAS seeks from its applicants.

The first and foremost documents you would need are a mobile phone number and email address. These two things are essential as it initiates your NSFAS application process. Your phone number will be linked to your NSFAS account wallet, and your email will also serve as a point of communication between you and NSFAS.

Furthermore, other documents are needed to apply for NSFAS, including;

Your birth certificate.

Your birth certificate is the first form of identification when you are born. This document states your gender, name, hometown, and parents’ name. It is valid and requires documents for your NSFAS application.

An identical copy of your parents, guardian, or spouse.

This could be a national identification card or any ID that proves and confirms the details of your parents, guardian, or spouse. Remember that you only need to submit each of them and not all. If your parents/guardian are still alive and looking into your NSFAS application, that is when you need to submit a copy of their ID. on the other hand, if you are married or engaged, your spouse’s identification can be used in place of your parent’s or guardian.

Proof of your income or that of your parents/guardian

This could be a bank statement or payslip indicating your salary or the amount your receive on a timely basis for your welfare. Unless you are already on the government of South African grant list, you need not submit any proof of income, which applies to you, the applicant, or your parents/guardian.

These documents only go to those who are physically challenged or disabled; NSFAs will require you to submit any documents that support s your disability. On the other hand, you can find that form online on the NSFAS

website. This form will be a guide to help you state your disability and other special needs.

The applicant must fill out a consent form, proving their parents or guardian are aware of your NSFAS application. As part of the NSFAS guidelines, your parents must sign/stamp this form, which will serve as a valid document.

Does NSFAS require certified documents?

NSFAS requirements regarding certified documentation have been changed. To further understand what a certified document means, you need to know that a certified document is a duplicated version of the original document that has been stamped or signed by a governmental institution or independent body to confirm the authenticity of the copied version.

An example is a school certificate from a government institution. The school may have two copies: a certified copy and a true copy. Both are original, but the school may hand over to you the certificate copy while they keep the true copy. In this case, your copy has been signed or stamped by that institution and can be termed as a valid document.

In the past, NSFAS would request applicants to submit a certified copy of their documents, but that has changed.

In August 2022, following the outbreak of covid-19, NSFAS decided to make a few amendments to this request to reduce contacts and fasten the process for applicants who need funds.

NSFAS informed the general public on 7th August that certified copies of documents will not be a requirement. The institution waived off the policy of applicants trying to certify their documents before submitting them.

The national students funding aid scheme, as of now, has amended those requirements.

Can I apply for NSFAS without my parents?

As part of the requirements of NSFAS, the need to put your application without your parents is impossible. Applying for NSFAS without parents in this state will mean either your parents are no more or can not be found; This has always been part of the criteria.

NSFAs will not accept applications from those without parents; This is why having a guardian sign your consent form is necessary.

If you are without parents and are looking to apply for NSFAS, remember you can use your guardian or spouse; This can serve as supporting documents. The downloaded consent form will be filled out and used to support your claim.

You can apply without your parents, but your consent form must be filled out and signed by your guardian. But if you do not have any parents, guardians, or spouses, just know you can not apply for NSFAS.
