UIF

The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) provides benefits to employees who may find themselves not at work due to termination of employment, maternity, illness, adoption, paternity, or death of the contributor. Once you apply for any of the benefits, you can expect to receive your payment after a specific period. The good news is that there are different options you can consider to check the status of your claim. This article outlines the measures you can take to track your UIF application

How Long Does UIF Pay After Signing for the First Time?

When you sign up for UIF benefits for the first time, there are certain documents you should include, and you also need to register as a job seeker. Therefore, due processes must be followed by the UIF to determine the applicants who qualify for benefits.

Your reasons for applying for the benefits should be valid, and you must meet certain criteria to qualify. The process usually takes up to eight weeks. When your UIF claim is approved, you will be notified to submit a payment request form.

Once the UIF has determined that your application is successful, you can expect to receive your UIF payments after some time once you have signed. There are various criteria you need to meet to qualify for any UIF benefits, as well as the reasons for your claims needing to be valid. The first payment goes into your bank account in about two or four days when the process is complete.

Processing the second and third payments usually takes less than ten working days when you sign the continuation of payment. The UIF always double-checks if you are still unemployed and verifies your details to prevent fraud.

What Is the Maximum UIF Payment?

The maximum salary considered for UIF deductions is capped at R17 712 per month or R212 544. Even if you earn more than this amount, the UIF contribution is calculated using the maximum earnings ceiling. If you earn an excess amount, it is not included in the calculation of UIF contributions. To calculate your UIF payout, you must first work out your daily earnings. The formula below helps you calculate the maximum UIF payment using the maximum earnings ceiling.

• R17 712 (Monthly salary) x 12 (Months per year) ÷ 365 Days in a year) = daily income (Year 1).

• i.e. R17712 x 12 / 365 = R582.31 per day.

The scale of 38% is used to calculate the UIF daily rates for the maximum earnings ceiling of R17 712.

Therefore, the maximum payout per month for the maximum contributor is R221.27 x 30 (days) = R6,638.10. If you earn above the highest threshold, your UIF payment will be R6, 638.10 per month.

How Do I Know if My UIF Claim Has Been Processed?

Once you apply for UIF benefits, you will need to make a follow-up to check the status of your claim because you will not get any communication from the fund. When you complete your registration, you will need to log into the UIF official website to get all the details you may need about your account.

To check your UIF claim status online, follow the steps below.

You will get an SMS notification telling you whether your claim has been processed or not.

Another option is to send an email to BCP@labour.gov.za to inquire about the status of your claim. Be sure to include your full name, ID number, and reference number.

Offline options include visiting your nearest labour office to check your UIF claim status. You need to present your ID and reference number to the UIF official, who will run a check to see if your claim has been activated or not. If it is not yet activated, they will tell you the date when you can expect it to be processed. If there are any issues with your application, the clerk will tell you so that you can rectify them.

You can also phone the UIF office on 012 337 1680 to check the status of your UIF claim. Get all your details ready before you call the office. Another option is to use the UIF USSD code *134*843# to check the status of your claim. Follow the prompts that appear on your smartphone when you dial this code.

How Long Does It Take for UIF to Pay

Registering at the Labour Office for UIF benefits usually takes eight weeks before you get your first payment. You must register as a work seeker and sign the register four weeks after your initial registration. The processing time is usually longer because the UIF wants to prove if you need the bailout.

When the UIF gets another job for you before the approval of your application, they expect you to take the offer. If you unreasonably decline the job offer, you may not qualify to get UIF benefits. Your application can be approved in about eight weeks when everything goes according to plan. You can contact the labor department if your claim is not activated within eight weeks. Once your application is successful, it will take two to three days for your money to be deposited into your bank account.

How Long Does It Take To Get UIF Money After Signing?

When you sign up for UIF money for the first time, you will likely get your first payment after eight weeks. The process is long because the UIF wants to prove first if you need the money. You also need to sign the work seeker register for a certain period, which also affects your application’s application’s processing.

However, once your application is approved, it will take less than ten days to get your second and third payments. When everything has been confirmed to be correct, all you need to do is to wait for your money to be deposited into your account until your contributions are exhausted.

The UIF provides benefits to workers registered with the fund because of factors like illness, unemployment, maternity leave, adoption, and death of the contributor. It usually takes up to eight weeks for your application for benefits to be processed. Once approved, it will take two to three days to start getting your payment into your bank account.
