How To Apply For Foster Child Grant

Applying for a foster child grant can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. Let’s discuss the steps you need to take to apply for a SASSA foster care grant.

  1. Visit the nearest South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) office and bring the following:
    • The child’s birth certificate and your thirteen-digit-bar-coded ID
    • For refugees, carry your refugee ID and status permit
    • If you don’t have the child’s birth certificate or your ID:
      • Fill out an affidavit in a standard South African Social Security Agency design. Ensure a Commissioner of Oaths is present when doing this, and he/she must not be a SASSA executive official.
      • Carry a sworn statement approved by a reputable individual (such as a counsellor, school principal, and more) who’s familiar with you and that child.
      • A SASSA executive will take your fingermarks. You’ll get a referral to the Department of Home Affairs, where you’ll apply for the identity card as the application is being reviewed. Be ready to have the grant suspended If you don’t receive an ID.
      • Prove with a document or documents that you visited the Department of Home Affairs where you applied for the identity cards and/or child birth certificate.
      • Share that temporary ID you received from the Department of Home Affairs (i.e., if they issued it).
      • Share a baptismal certificate (i.e., if you have one).
      • Share a health clinic card report (i.e., if you have one).
      • Share the child’s learning certificate (i.e., if the kid is at school).
    • Child/children’s birth certificates or their IDs from their nation of origin
    • Court order proof that positioned the child/children in your care
    • Documents proofing your marital status.
  2. Fill out the application document and ensure you do it while a SASSA officer is around ( you can do this alone or ask for help only from a SASSA official).
  3. You’ll get a receipt that you’ll keep as your application proof.

To apply for a SASSA foster child grant, you must submit several documents to prove that you qualify.

The first document that you will need to submit is an application form. This form can be found at any SASSA office and must be completed in full and signed by the parent or guardian. Once the form is completed, you must attach proof of identity and address, such as a South African ID book or passport. If you are applying on behalf of a minor, you must include their birth certificate.

In addition to the above documents, you will also need proof of income. This may include salary slips, bank statements, or payslips from the last three months. If you are unemployed or not receiving earnings, you must submit proof of unemployment or evidence of social grants received.

Finally, you will need to submit documents that prove that you have sufficient caregiving experience and are fit and able to look after a foster child. This may include references from previous foster placements or documents from a doctor or psychologist confirming your ability to provide care.

Once the grant is approved, monthly payments are made, depending on the foster parent’s preferences. Also, foster care grants typically end at age 18.
