How Much is the SASSA Grant for Old Age 2026?

Are you curious about the SASSA grant for old age in 2026? Well, we have some excellent news for you!  For those below 75 years old, the current pension amount is R2 080 per person per month. If you are over 75, the pension amount is slightly higher at R2 100 per person per month. And remember, the amount will be revised again in October 2026.

If you want to apply for the Older Persons Grant, read the requirements carefully to ensure you qualify. Remember that it may take up to 3 months for SASSA to assess your application and provide an outcome. If you are denied but feel you meet all the criteria, you can appeal to the National Department of Social Development within 90 days of rejection.

Who Qualifies for SASSA Old Age Grant?

Do you qualify for the SASSA Old Age Grant? Look no further because we have all the information you need. To be eligible for the SASSA Old Age Pension Grant, you must be 60 or older, a South African citizen or permanent resident, and not receive any other social grant. Additionally, you and your spouse must comply with a means test if married, and you must submit a 13-digit barcoded identity document (ID). It’s also important to note that applicants must not be in a care facility or state institution.

If you meet all the eligibility requirements, you can apply for the grant online at the official website of the South African Social Security Agency. Once you apply for the support, SASSA will approve your application if you meet all the requirements.

If you mistakenly cancelled your SASSA grant, don’t worry; you can reinstate your application. So, if you or someone you know qualifies for the SASSA Old Age Grant, apply and take advantage of this valuable opportunity.

What is the New SASSA Amount for Old Age?

Good news for SASSA grant recipients! As of April 1, 2026, grant amounts have increased. The Older Persons Grant (old age pension) will increase to R2080 for recipients between 60 and 74 and R2100 for recipients over 75. The Disability Grant, Child Support Grant, Child Support Grant Top-Up, Foster Child Grant, Care Dependency Grant, War Veterans Grant, and Grant-In-Aid will also increase their grant amounts.

These increases are due to the South African government’s decision to allocate additional funding to Social Development, with R30 billion being used for inflation-linked increases for social grants. This increase in grant amounts will undoubtedly positively impact the lives of those receiving them, providing them with more financial stability and support.

It’s important to note that these increases took place on April 1, 2026, with further increases to follow on October 1, 2026. So, mark your calendars and check with SASSA to ensure you receive the correct amount.

What Date is SASSA Old Age Paid?

If you’re a recipient of the Sassa Old Age Grant, you might wonder when your next payment date is. Well, the good news is that the payment for the Older Persons Grant happened on 4 April 2026. It’s important to remember that if you have any other grants linked to your account, they were also paid on the same day.

You don’t need to withdraw your money on the exact payment date, as the funds will remain in your account until you need them. You should wait a few days before removing your cash to avoid long queues.

The current pension amount is R2 080 per person per month (if you are under 75 years old) and R2 100 per month (if you are over 75 years old). You’ll be happy to know that this amount will be revised again in October 2026.

You can find the requirements on the Sassa website if you need help determining whether you qualify for the grant. Remember that your application may take up to three months to be assessed. If your application gets declined, you can appeal to the National Department of Social Development within 90 days of rejection.

How Do I Check My Old Age Grant Balance?

Unlike the COVID-19 R370 grant, checking your SASSA Old Age Grant balance is quite different. But don’t worry; it’s still effortless.

Firstly, let’s remind ourselves of what the Old Age Grant is. It’s a grant given to people who are 60 years and above and aren’t fit enough to work. The amount paid varies depending on your age.

To check your balance, you can visit any ATM closest to you, check at SASSA pay points at no charge, or check using the USSD code 1203737# with your registered phone number with SASSA. You can also call SASSA’s toll-free number, 0800 600 160, to check your balance.

How Many Months Does SASSA Pay After Death?

SASSA Pension, also known as the SASSA Older Persons Grant, is cancelled after the grant recipient’s death, and there is no residual benefit payable to heirs. The deceased’s unclaimed funds on their SASSA card may be used to offset the funeral costs through an unclaimed benefit claim. SASSA also allows grant recipients to pay up to 10% of their grant money towards funeral cover. You can contact SASSA to get details of where the policy is held and how to claim it to cover funeral costs.

SASSA will only pay out the due grant money for the month the grant recipient passes away. If the deceased did not collect any grant money (in the month) when they died or had residual funds in their account, you could apply for an unclaimed benefit to help offset the funeral costs. If you were a dependent of the deceased, you might now qualify for other SASSA grants based on your circumstances. SASSA funeral benefits are available to any South African citizen or permanent resident who benefits from SASSA grant or social security benefit. It is advised to talk to a SASSA representative when presenting the death certificate to see what financial aid is available to you.
