To assist people with disabilities who cannot support themselves financially, the SASSA Disability Grant is a critically important financial aid program. The grant is meant to help with the expenses related to living with a disability, such as medical costs, assistive technology, and other related costs. The good news is that in October 2024, the maximum SASSA Disability Grant will increase to R2 090 per person monthly. Currently, it is R2 080. You need to be a resident of South Africa and either a refugee, a citizen, or a permanent resident. Additionally, you must have a physical or mental impairment that prevents you from working or making a living wage, be between 18 and 59, and meet the other eligibility requirements. To receive the grant, even if you meet the requirements, you must pass the SASSA means test. This case means having a maximum household income of R92 520 annually, or R6 800 per month, for a single person and a maximum household income of R185 040 annually, or R15 420 per month, when there are two caregivers for the disabled person. Considering this, the government will periodically raise the means test to reflect inflation.
