The South African Social Security Agency states that the following circumstances constitute eligibility for a disability grant: physical impairments such as impaired movement, paralysis, amputations, blindness, death, and dumb. Any disability that affects the normal intellectual ability of a human, which SASSA has given examples as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression, is considered a mental illness. 

Autism spectrum disorder and Down syndrome are examples of intellectual impairment. Sensory impairment like eyesight and hearing loss.

How much is the SASSA disability grant 2025?

Once you meet all the necessary requirements of the SASSA disability grant, you are considered to be a recipient of the grant. Your medical assessment and evaluation determine a permanent or temporary disability. The final judgment on whether you can receive a disability grant is not based on your medical officer but on a complete assessment of your report and other details submitted. The disability grant may only provide up to R1 980. As SASSA confirmed in 2025, the disability grant for 2025 will not be more than R1980.
