The matric pass mark for English language is considered to be 40% of your total matrix score. The English language as a  matic subject is a home language and therefore meets the standards of a compulsory subject.

Following the calculation on the matric exams, the final matric exam constitutes 75% of your matric exams. It is required that the matric results must constitute the overall assessment as well as the main matrix exams. 

Students who write the matric exams must understand that the English language is a compulsory subject, irrespective of its role in the matric exams; a 40% score is required to pass English in matric. Learners and students need not less than 40% of their total score in English to make a pass.

What is a good score for English?

The definition of a “good score” can be vague in a certain context. When something is regarded as good, it is considered to be accepted, appreciated, and worthy. Putting the English language in that spot, what score could be considered as good?

Looking at the importance of the English language in the matric exams, students who take part must understand the role of it. Understanding the role of English in the matric exams will help you prepare well for tertiary. 

Looking at what is regarded as a good score can be uncertain for many learners and students. When we look at the results for the various subjects, they are put in percentages and then converted to grades. There are numbers in a hierarchal form that represents the total score of the English subject. The higher the score, the higher the grade number. 

In some cases, a good score can be relative, but in a general overview where grading begins from 1 to 10, a grade of 5 may not be regarded as a good score. This can happen when the general performance in the matric goes below the belt. 

However, a good score for English can be regarded as any score above 70%. 

In some cases, a good score for English in matric exams is usually around 80 to 90 or even higher. This indicates that the student has a solid understanding of language skills, comprehension, and communication abilities. The meaning of a “good score”  can differ depending on personal objectives, the standards set by the school, and the grading system being used.

By understanding the highest possible score, students can better gauge their performance and set realistic goals for their English exams.

When it comes to grading systems, the concept of a perfect score can vary depending on the system in place. While some systems may consider a perfect score to be 100 out of 100.
