How to apply for NSFAS online?

According to a report by McKinsey & Company, the COVID-19 pandemic has completely overhauled how government departments do business within a matter of months.

The study, a global survey of executives, reports that companies have accelerated the digitization of their customer and supply-chain interactions, as well as their internal operations, by three to four years.

NSFAS is no exception to this trend, with both its application and payouts process being completely digitized at the behest of the minister of higher education.

The new digital front of NSFAS has made the application process more accessible to prospective students, many of whom cannot afford manual registrations due to the logistical costs involved in frequenting offices in urban areas.

All of the above steps will prompt the NSFAS website to send an OTP that expires within a 24-hour period to the email address and phone numbers provided.

Submit the provided OTP to the myNSFAS website and click on submit.

These will complete the re-registration process for NSFAS, allowing you to click on the apply tab and be directed to the online application form.

All academically qualified students from poor and working-class families are encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible to increase their chances of being accepted into the bursary scheme’s program.

With projections and past trends in application volumes showing exorbitant annual increases in the number of students registering for NSFAS, the 2026 academic year is expected to see applications that number in the millions.

NSFAS application 2026 opening date

The opening for NSFAS applications for the 2026 academic year commenced on the 28th of September 2026.

Applications are open to all students who wish to enroll for higher education at a university or TVET college of their choosing.

All prospective beneficiaries are urged to ensure that their academic marks permit them entry into a university course before applying.

And prospective students should take note that for now, the bursary fund is open only to those from households who earn less than R370 000 per annum, with talk of funding in the future being extended to cover the missing middle-income homes.

Both the opening and closing dates for applications for funding were made to coincide with the release of the 2026 matric academic results in order to give prospective beneficiaries ample time to apply.

The 2026 academic year saw NSFAS receive 40 000 appeal applications from students rejected from being funded that same year.

Of the 40 000 appeal applications, NSFAS was able to review and process 28 000 of the appeals and communicate their outcomes with the aggrieved parties.

With 12 000 of those appeals remaining unprocessed due to a lack of supporting evidence to conclude their cases.

It is advised to apply for funding at the earliest possible date to avoid high backlogs in the system and becoming the case of an inevitable appeals
