When Will Matric Rewrite Results Be Released?

The Education Department informs all candidates about the dates of rewriting their exams which usually start in May and end in June. This year’s last day of the matric rewrite exam was 23 June 2026. The Minister of Basic Education has since announced that 7 August 2026 will be the release day of matric rewrite results.

If you have sat for an exam rewrite in the 2026 academic year, you should expect to collect your results beginning 8 August 2026. When the results are released, students can check them online, but they will be available for collection the following day going forward.

How Do I Get Matric Rewrite Results?

When the matric rewrite results have been released, you can check them online. Follow the steps below to view your results.

Once you have viewed your results, you can request the Department of Education to send your results statement via email. This usually takes less than 24 hours. You can then print the provisional results statement, which you can use while waiting to release your matric certificate.

What Happens When You Fail Matric Rewrite?

Failing a matric rewrite is not a big issue since you can register for a rewrite matric exam as many times as you wish. The rewrite matric course is specifically designed to help students improve their grades in different subjects. However, you should know that matric rewrite exams are only offered once a year. For instance, the 2026 matric rewrite exams have already been completed on 23 June. Therefore, if you fail again, you can only register for another rewrite in 2026.

You c an register for matric rewrite exams every year until you reach 21 years. Once you are above 21 years, you will be eligible for a matric upgrade. Just like a rewrite, a matric upgrade is designed to help interested candidates to improve their results. With a matric upgrade, you will write the same matric exams, but the approach used is different.

Students undertaking a matric upgrade have more time to prepare and can write their exams in 12 months or more. Moreover, matric upgrade students can study using distance learning and or go to learning institutions where they will get assistance from lecturers. They are also provided with study material and all the support they may want.

You can request a recheck or remark to rewrite exams if you are unsatisfied with your matric. When you choose this option, your exam scripts are checked further to ensure they are error-free. However, for your script to be rechecked or remarked, you’ll be expected to pay a fee for the service. You need to get more information before considering this option which is not free.

If the recheck is unsuccessful, you can register for the exam again. Matric rewrites aim to help students improve their results. Therefore, you can retake your matric exams as often as you desire until you get satisfactory results.

How Can I Check My Matric Rewrite Results Online 2026?

Matric rewrite exams are meant for students who are below 21 years. These candidates can access their results by visiting the exam centre where they sat for their exams or visiting the district education office. Alternatively, they can visit the Department of Basic Education matric results portal at https://www.education.gov.za/MatricResults/ExamResults/tabid/175/Default.aspx and enter their details to access results.

How Much Does Matric Rewrite Cost?

A matric rewrite is offered for free. However, students will meet different costs depending on the school or college where they have registered to study for their matric rewrite. These institutions have different fee structures, which are determined by various factors. Before you register for a matric rewrite, you should do your research to make an informed decision.

All students who fail their matric exams or get low passes are allowed to rewrite the subjects they have not done well until they get good results. There is no limit for taking matric rewrite exams, which are usually scheduled for May and June after the release of the final matric results. The Department of Education announces the date to release matric rewrite results. If you fail your rewrite exam, you can always register again until you get the desired grades.
