Schools With the Best Matric Results In South Africa

Matriculants in South Africa have the option of writing the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations or the Independent Examination Board (IEB) exams, depending on the school attended. NSC follows the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS), a curriculum offered in government schools, whereas the IEB does not follow CAPS. Instead, they follow a curriculum offered in private schools. However, both NSC and IEB are certified by UMALUSI, so the candidates from public and independent or private schools get the same matric certificate

IEB exams are commonly offered at elite schools, which are a preserve for students from affluent families. Private schools that offer IEB have smaller classes and enjoy several benefits, which lead to outstanding matric results every year. In contrast, NSC caters to the needs of all South Africans regardless of race or class. For instance, more than 920,000 sat for NSC exams in 2022, and the pass rate was 80.1%, an improvement from the 76.4% pass rate in 2021. Since NSC consists of the bulk of matriculants in South Africa, this article focuses on the public schools with the best Matric results.
